Oxford’s Christmas Lights Festival
17 November - 19 November
Oxford’s Christmas Lights annual festive celebration draws in local communities and visitors into Oxford’s city centre and is a highlight of Oxford’s cultural calendar. In 2016 the festival delivered 53 events to over 100,000 people in partnership with 25 cultural organisations and engaged with thousands of participants in festival projects and events. Starting in 2009 as a single evening with a lantern parade at its heart, the festival now takes place over 3 days and includes light and sound installations, a festive market, music, dance and lots of free activities in venues across the city. We are passionate about bringing free cultural experiences into the city centre for all to enjoy.
Hotspots of activity are in Broad Street’s Christmas market, Gloucester Green’s live dance stage, magical installations in the Castle Quarter and this year we are delighted to include Westgate Oxford into the mix as the lantern parade weaves through new spaces as well as historic ones.
Each year the festival explores a different theme and in 2017 the theme is ‘The World in Oxford’. Our diverse communities will be showcasing projects that explore identity and journeys to Oxford. The city’s international links are highlighted through light and sound installations as well as a special piece created by young people on their visits to Oxford’s twinned towns Leiden, Bonn, Grenoble, Perm and Leon.
