Blue Plaque Trail — Barnard Castle

Got some budding historians in the family? Head to Barnard Castle for a journey through the legacy of the area and the pioneers of the town nestled above the River Tees. The bustling market town was founded in the 12^th century by Bernard de Balliol, then later fell into the hands of Richard III. This is a perfect family activity, but it also provides a unique insight into the area which otherwise seems a little unsuspecting. Follow more than 20 plaques through the heart of the town and keep your eyes peeled for names such as Charles Dickens and George Brown, the founder and first editor of the Darlington and Stockton Times. While you’re in the town, visit The Bowes Museum for picturesque gardens and an impressive collection of European fine art.

Adventure Valley — County Durham

If you’ve got young kids, they will be in their element here, so prepare for a sleepy car journey home as they’ll be worn out after hours of fun at Adventure Valley. While this won’t be the most relaxing Sunday, but it is the perfect way to let your little ones have fun and experience a variety of activities — from go-karting to a petting zoo and soft play facilities. You’re guaranteed to have a full day of non-stop entertainment here, and you might even feel a bit competitive if you take on your kids at the 18-hole adventure golf. Durham Heritage Coast Walk — Crimdon

Longing for some fresh, coastal air? The 11 mile stretch between Crimdon and Seaham follows the England Coast Path National Trail, and there are so many unique natural features waiting to be uncovered on a long, Sunday walk. From coastal denes to grasslands, there’s a bit of everything which makes it such a striking area to explore, and you might even spot some of the local wildlife while you are there — from deer, to foxes and badgers. It is also a hotspot for dog walkers, so bring a flask and your four-legged companions along for the journey. Fuel your day with a Sunday lunch at one of the many Durham restaurants and then set off along the trail.

Riverside Park — Chester-Le-Street

Flag down an ice cream van (weather permitting!) and take a leisurely stroll around Riverside Park in Chester-Le-Street and enjoy hours of fun. Kids can be kept busy by exploring the 16-foot-high castle and large play area, and a splashpad for those warmer days. The park features some stunning wildlife, living amongst the park’s well-kept gardens. Enjoy a tranquil walk alongside the River Wear and embrace the peace and quiet… you’ll come away feeling revitalised and ready for the week ahead.
