This includes their own dedicated workspace with extended access, allowing them to fully develop their ideas using whatever materials and forms they like, at hours not confined to class times.

The high teacher to student ratio across all Kings programmes means that every student’s learning is carefully tailored and monitored to ensure the greatest possible success. Within the art department in particular, the wealth and variety of expertise among our staff means that students are guaranteed the specialist support they need to reach their specific goals for university and beyond.
Programmes are taught expert teaching staff, who are experienced in, and passionate about their specialist areas, who maintain and advance their creative professions alongside their teaching commitments at Kings. For example, Art teacher Rosie Fairfox-Cholmeley, is a professional illustrator, printmaker and bookbinder whose work can be seen at exhibitions and in numerous publications, she is also Artist-in-Residence of Oxford University at Wytham Woods.
Students also benefit from input sessions with a range of experts both on and off campus, including regular lectures and portfolio guidance from university faculty members including from both Kingston University and UWE Bristol.
Kings open the art studio as far as possible to the wider artistic world, offering many opportunities, on many levels, for students to become stimulated, curious and engaged in art. This includes participating in regular art excursions, which offer students the chance to learn new skills, explore art venues, experience other artists’ creative work and gain inspiration for their own creative practice.
The Kings Art Foundation is specifically designed to provide the core skills required for all art related degrees, before enabling students to focus on a particular specialism in preparation for university. The Foundation also provides an excellent basis for the preparation of a portfolio on which applicants are assessed for university entry. Students who complete this programme will progress directly to Year 1 of their university degree.
The school provides a wide range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities which open the art to the wider artistic world, offering many opportunities, on many levels, for students to become stimulated, curious and engaged in art and provide opportunities to both enhance university applications and to explore wider interests, activities and support personal development. Opportunities include a wide range of clubs, societies and activities; Kings art and design students participate in regular art excursions, locally and nationally, to develop their appreciation of art and design, provide inspiration for their creative work and to understand the possibilities for further study and artistic practice.
All Kings students are supported by a Personal Tutor. Their role is to oversee all aspects of students learning, development and welfare. Subject and Course Heads and specialist UCAS advisors provide further advice, support and guidance, working to ensure students achieve their full potential and take full advantage of the opportunities available to them within the college, the local community and in their progression to leading universities and specialist institutions for creative arts.
“All students receive high-quality careers advice to enable them to make informed choices about their futures. Students are extremely well prepared for the next stage of their education and achieve the qualifications necessary to pursue appropriate university degrees. The very large majority of students proceed to good universities following highly regarded courses such as accounting, art, business and engineering as well as medical and veterinary sciences.” Ofsted 2019.
