Priory Park and Paddling Pool

A place close to my heart as I grew up in Crouch end as a child and Priory Park was a walk away from our home. I now visit every summer with my own children and feel the nostalgia, and love that so many elements about the park haven’t changed.

From Hertfordshire, it is under 40 minutes nestled in the heart of Hornsey, North London. Priory Park is a cherished green space that offers a delightful blend of history, recreation, and family-friendly amenities. Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor seeking a tranquil retreat, this 6.5-hectare park has something for everyone.

A Glimpse into Priory Park’s Rich History

Established in 1896 as the Middle Lane Pleasure Grounds, Priory Park expanded in 1926 with the addition of Lewcock’s Field, forming the park we know today. It’s protected under the Fields in Trust Queen Elizabeth II Field scheme and has proudly held the Green Flag Award since 2003, recognizing its high standards and community value.

Children’s Playground: A Hub of Fun

The park features a well-equipped playground designed to cater to children of various ages. With a range of play structures, swings, and climbing frames, it’s a safe and engaging environment where kids can expend their energy and make new friends. The playground’s design ensures accessibility, allowing children of all abilities to join in the fun.

Priory Park Paddling Pool: Splashing Good Times

Now THIS IS WHY WE VISIT. During the warmer months, the park’s paddling pool becomes a focal point for families. Open to children aged 8 and under, the pool operates every day from 21 July to 1 September, and on weekends from 23 May to 20 July, weather permitting (2025 dates).

It’s free to use, and no booking is required. The pool is maintained regularly, being emptied, cleaned, and refilled three times a week, with chlorine added as necessary to ensure safety.

Amenities and Activities for All Ages

Beyond the playground and paddling pool, Priory Park offers a variety of facilities:

  • Café: A cozy spot to grab a coffee or snack while watching the world go by.
  • Sports Facilities: Tennis courts (bookable online), basketball courts, a petanque court, and table tennis tables cater to sports enthusiasts.
  • Philosopher’s Garden: A serene, dog-free area perfect for picnics and quiet reflection.

Heritage Trail: Informative boards throughout the park share its rich history and notable features, like the Metcalf Fountain and the Lamorna granite fountain from 1909.

Priory Park Community Engagement and Events

The Friends of Priory Park, a dedicated volunteer group, work alongside Haringey Council to maintain and enhance the park. They organize regular activities, including gardening sessions and litter-picking events, fostering a strong sense of community .

The park also hosts various events throughout the year, such as wellbeing walks and community gatherings, making it a lively hub for local residents.

Whether you’re looking for a place to relax, play, or engage with the community, Priory Park in Hornsey is a delightful destination that caters to all ages.
