Bernwood Forest

Once a Royal Hunting Forest, these days Bernwood Forest is an ideal spot to go for a family woodland walk.  Within easy reach of Oxford, Bicester and Thame, Bernwood Forest is tucked just inside Oxfordshire on the border with Buckinghamshire.

There’s lots of space to explore and we dived straight into the forest from the car park.  Making our own way through the pine trees, there were plenty of logs to clamber on and pine cones to collect.

The forest changes into leafy glades with dappled light filtering through and it was a wonderfully tranquil spot to explore.

Bernwood Forest Butterfly Trail

Running through the forest and easily reached from the car park is the butterfly trail.  It’s wide and hard packed so an easy route to take if you want a pushchair walk. Bernwood Forest woods contain about forty species of butterflies making it one of the most important habitats in Britain.

Bernwood Forest Parking & Facilities

There’s a free car park at Bernwood Forest, not far from Horton-Cum-Studley.  However there are not toilets so make sure you go before you leave home!
