Cardboard Tube Rocket

This cardboard tube rocket craft will get children and adults zooming all around the room in a few easy steps.  It’s a great kids activity if they love space or for bonfire night.  It takes about 20mins to do and quicker if you prepare some of the materials in advance.

What You Need

  • Toilet roll
  • Coloured card (for rocket)
  • Tissue paper (for fire)
  • Tin foil (aluminium foil if you’re American)
  • Stick (a lollypop stick works well)
  • Tape
  • Glue stick
  • Pencil
  • Mug
  • Scissors
  • Stapler – optional



How to make a cardboard tube rocket

  • Get a toilet roll and place it on a piece of coloured card.
  • Cut to size by rolling card around toilet roll with a small amount of overlap.
  • Glue the card to the toilet roll.

  • On a different coloured card draw around a mug
  • Cut circle out.
  • Cut this in half to make it into a semi circle
  • Glue along half of the straight side of the semi circle.
  • Fold round to form a cone the size of the toilet roll top.
  • Stick two pieces of tape on the inside of the cone.
  • Then stick the cone to the toilet roll, with the tape inside the toilet roll.
  • Make three windows by folding circles out of tin foil or use milk bottle tops or chocolate money wrappers and then glue them onto the rocket.

  • Using tissue paper or paper that is yellow, orange and red, create a flame. Cut flame shapes out of the paper or cut jagged edges along ends of tissue paper strips.
  • Staple or stick flame pieces together.
  • Tape the flame inside the bottom of the rocket.
  • Tape a stick inside of the rocket.

You can hold the rocket by the stick and run around making zooming noises or display it in your window on bonfire night.
