Donnington Castle

Donnington Castle, with it’s striking twin towered gatehouse, is a great spot for a mini adventure with kids near Newbury.  This English Heritage site dates back to the 14th century and was built by Sir Richard de Adderbury, a knight in the service of the the Black Prince.

The castle area is reached from the car park with a short walk up a steep gravelled path but easy enough with a pushchair.  The area surrounding the castle is all grass so less easy to be pushing a buggy around.

Donnington Castle itself is small, not the type you go for a walk around inside but the grounds around and the artillery defence ruins are great to clamber over.  My boys declared it was perfect for a game of hide and seek.  While you can’t go inside, you can peak through the huge iron gates all the way through to the other side.

There are lovely views from Donnington Castle out towards Newbury and plenty of grassy space for a picnic but please do bring your rubbish home so everyone can enjoy this West Berkshire attraction.

Family Walks

There are a number of trails leading off from the car park and past Donnington Castle to explore if you fancy a family walk to extend your visit.  Not really suitable for a pushchair but it is possible to do a circular walk that takes in the castle ruins and Snelsmore Common although at around 5km probably best for older kids.  Otherwise, you can wonder along a pathway or public bridleway and back again.
