Part of a small chain of passionate bakeries, Gail’s in North Oxford’s Summertown is a lovely stop for a spot of breakfast.
The curved wooden counter draws you in and is literally heaped with a mouth watering array of pastries and cakes. They also have a Baker’s Breakfast menu which is served until 3pm with choices to excite grown ups as well as more child friendly options such as scrambled eggs and the oh so delicious blueberry pancakes.
I opted for the grown up version with my fluffy American style pancakes smothered in seasonal fruit compote, a generous heap of creme fraiche, the sweet touch of maple syrup and a scattering of blueberries.
There’s a calm atmosphere with ambient music, warm rustic tables and funky lighting. With one large central table to share and one long window facing table to watch the world go by, it’s not the place to go with lots of pushchairs. However, it’s great for slightly older kids who want to feel more grown up and that they’re out for a special treat. They also have a couple of highchairs so you can keep toddlers in check.
Nestled out the back and a complete but welcome surprise was their lovely hide away garden. This option really opens up the possibilities of going out for something special when you have a little one with ants in their pants as my just newly starting walker toddler seems to have!
There’s also a great selection of breads you can buy to take away (these guys know how to bake bread).
