Hogshaw Farm & Wilfelife Park (previously known as the Green Dragon Eco Farm) was recommended so often by other mums on various Facebook pages that I made my first visit with my kids back in 2016. Since then it’s become a family favourite and a day out we all love.
This can easily be a full day family trip out. We arrived at 11:30am and after 5 hours of non stop running around, I had to drag home two very tired boys, who would have happily kept playing. Hogshaw Farm recommend at least 2 hours to enjoy the whole experience.
There’s plenty to do at Hogshaw Farm without it being spread over too wide an area and all the staff are really friendly too.
See the Animals
The animals are always a highlight of our trips, you can purchase some good value some animal food when you arrive and choose ducks and chickens or goats and sheep. The ducks were very excited to be fed while the chickens a little less so. There were also a good selection of very friendly goats as well as pigs, sheep, horses and small animals like rabbits and gerbils.
There are a number of demonstrations on at regular intervals throughout the day from meeting the lambs, stroking the small pets and pony grooming. You can see the animals both inside in the animal barns as well as walking around the small grassy paddocks outside. There’s a special Pygmy goat walk through area which is brilliant and it’s lovely to be so close to these inquisitive creatures.
Wildlife Zone
Different to most children’s farms, Hogshaw Farm & Wildlife Park as a Wildlife Zone. Many of the animals are rescues and there. My boys always make a beeline to spot the lynx. You’ll discover birds of prey, reindeer, wallabies and an abundance of other British & European wildlife. While you’re visiting don’t miss the amazing Flying Bird Display where you’ll be able to see some of the birds of prey up close and learn all about them
Hogshaw Farm & Wildlife Park Outdoor Play
There’s a lovely big play park at Hogshaw Farm & Wildlife Park with a large climbing frame and slides for the older ones as well as something for the little ones. The sandpit is huge so plenty of space on a busy day and my boys loved the diggers. There’s also a large inflated pillow to bounce on until all energy is expended.
The outdoor pedal carts and ride on toys are much loved, especially the two seater, so my eldest could drive his younger brother around the race track. It gave me time to sit down on the benches and have a break!
Hogshaw Farm & Wildlife Park Indoor Play
With the British weather a bit unpredictable, it’s a great bonus to have two main indoor play areas. It’s been recently updated (2022) with a smaller area dedicated to littles and then a mid sized multi level playframe, This is also were the café is located and has plenty of seating. There’s a good view from the seating so if you’re lucky you might even get to sit down and enjoy a coffee while your kids play.
There’s also a messy play barn which has a couple of indoor sandpits and a really good sized bouncy castle.
Hogshaw Farm & Wildlife Park Nature Trail
With 44 acres of outdoor space, there’s also a nature trail, wildflower meadow as well as a walled garden and greenhouses.
Refreshments
There are plenty of picnic tables outside if you’re keeping costs down as well as a restaurant and café in the soft play barn.
If you’re looking for a little more calm then I’d definitely recommend the separate dog friendly cafe at the main entrance. It has a more grown up vibe and last time I visited it’s where my in-laws who’d come with us headed to for their barista coffee and tasty treats.
