There’s something about a trail to follow that’s so much more exciting for kids than just going on a walk. The Millennium Green in Kingston Bapuize has a wonderful mosaic trail that’s just the right length for all ages.
Entering through a ornate metal gate you know you’re going to be going on an adventure. There are 12 mosaics all with a nature theme spread through the Millennium Green and each one is unique.
The Millennium Green is is a nine acre community reserve and community park created by the villagers of Kingston Bagpuize in South Oxfordshire. You’ll find the first mosaic at the pond shortly after passing through the gate. The pond is a wildlife haven with nesting moorhens, newts and toads and a short boardwalk around one side.
Shortly after this you’ll see a big map board but I’d recommend downloading the map and printing it out if you can before you go. My kids were really motivated to check the map and follow a route to find all the mosaics. It’s also got a quiz and some great information so you can add in a little educational element without them even realising.
Over 2,000 native trees have been planted and it’s a wonderful space to explore with gravel pathways, green areas, wooded spots and open ground including a football pitch. Some of the mosaics are easy to find like the wonderful orchid sphere and other’s are a little more tucked away.
We loved the hidden fairy tucked inside a tunnel and halfway up a grassy mound. At the top of the hillock is a sundial which was commissioned by the Kingston Bagpuize and Southmoor WI in 2004.
To tell the time, you stand on teh spot beside the current month. During British Summer Time your shadow will point to the time on the ring of numbers . During GMT your shadow will be one hour fast. The are wild species of plants and fruits depicted on the sundial. I found it fascinating and my kids just enjoyed running around like crazy as they always do.
As well as the mosaic trail and great picnic spots, you’ll also find a football field with a couple of goals, some outdoor exercise equipment near the entrance and a rather cool maze that you won’t get lost in. If you’re looking for an epic maze then try the Malborough Maze at Blenheim Palace.
