Lud’s Church Trail

Lud’s Church is situated in the Black Forest midway between Buxton and Leek. It is a deep chasm of hillside (not actually a church) extending for over 100m with towering rock walls on either side. Dating back to the 15th century, according to the legend it was once used as a hiding place by Robin Hood & his Merry Men.

To get to Lud’s Church drive to the village of Gradback (SK17 0SU) and park in the car park or safely on the road if it’s full. The car park is best reached through the village of Flash, which is just off the A53 between Buxton and Leek. It is on the right hand side of the road, around 3 minutes’ drive down fairly steep lanes from the village. From there you will see plenty of signs for Lud’s Church.

The route is well sign posted, but head towards Gradback Mill – which is also a good spot for a coffee and a snack!  There’s a Lud’s Church walking trail map here.

Top tips: The walk is suitable for younger children, Steph had a 6 year old who manged it but its definitely not suitable for buggies. Also take a picnic as there’s plenty of nice spots in the beautiful woodland. There are also further walking spots available.

Thanks so much Solu Candles for your great review – we love to hear about new walking places not far from our local area.
