Perrygrove Railway always gets named when people ask for recommendations for a fun day out with kids in Gloucestershire. I was really excited to go and check it out for the first time in October Half Term. They’re also a Halloween free zone so it’s actually great to have a break from spooky trails and pumpkins.
Perrygrove family attraction is toddler heaven but my 8 and 10 year old had a blast too.
Of course the steam train was a massive highlight. Each family have their own enclosed carriage and you’re dry from the rain. You can go on as many times as you like and get off at various stops if you want. The round trip takes about 30-40 minutes. We loved all the tooting and the great billowing clouds.
A little muddy at the moment with all the rain and not suitable for buggies but there are great little trails on the woodland walk. This would also be a good place to visit on a hot day as there would be plenty of shade and a little cooler temperatures under the trees.
The treetop adventure caused much excitement. My boys ran around the different levels and waved as the trains went by. It’s also accessible for a pushchair which is fab if you have a tiny tot sleeping and toddler who wants to explore.
The play park is most suited to younger kids and has the huge advantage of having the main climbing frame and slide undercover. This meant we really managed to extend our time here as we weren’t soaked and it would give great shade on a sunny summers day. There are plenty of picnic tables scattered around too so a great stopping point for a picnic lunch outdoors.
We visited while there were Covid restriction in place so the indoor play village wasn’t open for us to review but it sounds great and would really extend a stay especially on a wet or cold day. The Indoor Village is home to five houses connected by secret passages – they’re the perfect place for a game of hide and seek. This is also where you unlock your treasure box if you have taken part in the Perrygrove educational Treasure Hunt (small additional charge).
If you’re looking for refreshments, there’s a good value cafe with sandwiches, toasties, snacks and drinks. The hot chocolate with marshmallows and cream got a big thumbs up. Staff are really friendly too.
Dogs are welcome too (£1)

Perrygrove are situated ½ mile south of Coleford on the B4228, (in the direction of Lydney). Coming from Coleford, we are on the left hand side of the road, about 200 yards after the traffic lights and about 500 yards before the Puzzlewood car park.
