Southwood Country Park has a brand new visitor centre in Farnborough which was officially opened by Rushmoor Borough Council’s Deputy Leader on Thursday (March 2), Cllr Martin Tennant.
The park covers 57 hectares of open space and is split into two areas, the east and west sides.
The east part of the park includes the field centre, the new playground, a car park and 27 hectares of natural land. Covering more than 30 hectares, the west side offers a network of formal and informal paths, with a 2.4 kilometre circular walking route, starting from the 31-space Kennels Lane car park. There is dog-proof fencing along the boundaries of Ively Road.

The features of the new playground include:
- a zip line
- numerous swings for babies and toddlers
- large rope climbing structure for the older children
- a ship like design for the smaller children
- 2x slides
- roundabout
- wooden interactive walled toys
- tree house with climbing ropes and slide
- various swing bridges to walk over
- stand on spinners
The whole playground is safely enclosed with a wooden fence around the outside and the floor is made of the soft cushioned rubber so if any falls then the little ones won’t get hurt.
The playground is in a perfect location where you can go for a leisurely walk, have a play in the park and then grab some refreshments afterwards. Plus the car park is situated outside with free parking, and inside the visitor centre they have toilet and changing facilities also.
Southwood Country Park Cafe
The new area features a cafe called Chalk in the Park which serves a range of drinks, snacks and meals, alongside a brand new state of the art playground. The cafe is planning a variety of seasonal events throughout the year that include an Easter Egg hunt, and a Summer Fair where you can expect a festival atmosphere with live music, fairground rides, family games and pop up feasting.
There is still a lot of work going on in the area and I can’t wait to see everything once it’s finished and what exciting things are going to come.
